INTRODUCTION:
My mother taught me that “If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all."
With that in mind I’ll say this, when Pantone announced Pantone 11-4201 Cloud Dancer – a soft, milky, barely-there white – as its Colour of the Year for 2026, it wasn’t met with universal approval.
Some, like us, were calculating what that choice meant at a time across the West, when right-wing movements are no longer quietly bubbling beneath the surface anymore.
Instead, they are loudly and brazenly dismantling institutions, rewriting histories and emboldening a fragile base that had long hidden itself behind the myth of cultural neutrality. The deliberate – and coordinated – destabilisation of global order, driven by greed, immorality, white narcissism and the spiritual bankruptcy of a powerful few; is the defining background on which this new colour shall be positioned.
For us, Pantone had long positioned itself as the authoritative voice of colour globally within the creative industries. An institution that trend forecasters, fashion designers, interior decorators, filmmakers, brand strategists, manufacturers and more have trusted to always read the cultural room. Their Colour of the Year picks, since 2000, have always shaped product lines, seasonal collections, advertising campaigns and creative briefs across entire industries. Which is precisely why this choice, at this moment in everyone’s history, represented a staggering failure of judgement and business integrity.
White on white. Or should that be Cloud Dancer on a white nationalist resurgent canvas splattered with aggressive reassertions of white supremacist ideology
How ground-breaking. How PanTone Deaf.
